A Highly Successful Summit
Friday, 18 September 2009

The first Asia Pacific Clean Energy Summit and Expo lived up to expectations, and then some.

The conference, which was held from August 31 to September 3 at the Sheraton Waikiki Resort, attracted more than 600 persons from 11 different nations. They came to the meeting to learn about the latest developments in renewable energy from 62 speakers and 54 exhibitors, and were not disappointed.

Kim Huntley, the Director of the Defense Energy Support Center, and one of the featured speakers, noted that “This was an outstanding venue to bring together the branches of the service that are substantial energy-users in the islands. It also offered a wonderful opportunity for building partnerships—between Hawaii and other countries. The Summit provided great value for everyone.”

And Kelly King, Vice President of Pacific Biodiesel, Inc., added: “It was a fantastic conference. People are so much more relaxed when they’re in Hawaii, so you can walk around and talk on a one-to-one level. There was a lot more interaction than I’ve experienced on the Mainland where folks are really rushed. Being able to hold these conversations got us further towards building the relationships that are necessary to advance this clean energy industry.”

In addition to formal sessions, there were many opportunities for delegates to interact at receptions, breakfasts, lunches, coffee breaks and a popular luau, which featured Polynesian entertainment. Governor Linda Lingle spoke from the podium on several occasions, and offered welcoming remarks at the luau.

The conference was organized by DBEDT, in cooperation with the Defense Energy Support Center and the U.S. Pacific Command. DBEDT plans to hold a second conference from August 30 to September 2, 2010, and based on the success of this event, expects even greater participation.
