Hawaii has established relationships with foreign governments and non-governmental organizations, federal agencies and national organizations to promote friendship, cultural ties, and goodwill. These relationships can also serve to raise Hawaii’s profile internationally, attract dynamic cooperative programs and stimulate Hawaii’s economy.
The Department of Business Economic Development and Tourism and its Office of International Affairs has established Sister-State relationships with provinces and prefectures in China, Japan, Korea, Philippines, and Portugal. In addition to Sister-State relationships, each county has established Sister-City and County-Sister relationships.
