Aloha, and welcome to the first edition of Hawaii Global
Links. Our "e-newsletter" will cover the world, with a focus on Asia.
Whether you're an "old China hand" or just starting out, we hope that
this newsletter will provide you with a valuable source of information.
Hawaii
is one of the few states in the U.S. to maintain offices in both
Beijing and Taipei. The state has strong social, cultural and
historical links to both places. In addition, it has distinct
advantages vis-à-vis other states, especially in its proximity to
Japan, Korea and China, and its many Asia-focused organizations which
offer residents opportunities to continually connect with, and learn
more about, the region. The offices are staffed by the Department of
Business, Economic Development & Tourism (DBEDT).
DBEDT
established the Taipei office in 1994 so that Hawaii businesses would
be able to take advantage of a rapidly developing economy which would
provide an attractive market for the state's products and services. An
added "plus": Hawaii educators would be able to tap the great number of
Taiwan students' seeking to continue their education overseas. Staff
also assisted Taiwan businesspersons in locating investment
possibilities in the Islands.
The success of the Taipei office
led to the opening of an office in Beijing in 2001. DBEDT's decision
was not a difficult one. China's economy enjoyed double-digit growth
throughout the 1990's and on into the 21st Century. The office would be
among the first state offices to offer a wide range of services for
both local residents and visitors from Hawaii. Staff would provide
advice on doing business in China; introduce Hawaii companies to local
firms; offer such services as landscape and resort development; and
organize and facilitate trade missions. An important responsibility
evolved: assisting high-ranking State officials, such as Governor Linda
Lingle, in visiting China; and facilitating visas and constructing
itineraries for numerous Chinese delegations' entering the state. These
delegations included a wide range of persons-scientists, tourism
officials, provincial governors, and some of the most powerful
individuals in the nation, such as Vice Premier Wu Yi.
In recent
years, the economies of Taiwan and China have greatly expanded. As they
continue to grow, so will the services of DBEDT's two offices. We hope
you will take advantage of the expertise of our experienced staff,
whether you are in business, education, culture and the arts, or some
other field. Please consider them your "partners" in helping you
achieve success.
